Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 看來像一本孩子看的書,但讀讀原著,趣味盎然,其中雙關語(puns)俯拾皆是,懂得解的話,真是打從心裡笑出來。作者Lewis Carroll(原名Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) 把本書寫得充滿英國文化色彩,趙元任又譯得心應手,不愧為語音大師。

雙關語是一個詞有兩種或多種意思,令人有不同的聯想,或是兩個或兩個以上的詞有相同或相近的發音,而意思不同,藉以製造幽默、滑稽的效果。也就是說,雙關語可以一詞多義,也可以異形同音或近音。
先來看看這段,在眼淚池上了岸後,Alice和mouse的對話:
"You promised to tell me your history, you know," saide Alice, "and why it is you hate - C and D," she added in a whisper, half afraid that it would be offended again.
"Mine is a long and a sad tale!" said the Mouse, turning to Alice, and sighing.
"It is a long tail, certainly," said Alice, looking down with wonder at the Mouse's tail: "but why do you call it sad?" And she kept on puzzling about it while the Mouse was speaking, so taht her idea of the tale was something like this: -

阿麗思聽了,瞧著那老鼠的尾巴說,「你這尾是曲啊﹗可是為甚麼又叫它苦呢﹗」她就一頭聽著那老鼠說話,一頭在在心上納悶,所以她聽的那老鼠講的「尾曲」的歷史是差不多像這個樣了的:——
